Super Bowl XLIV

The Super Bowl is the NFL’s championship game, which takes place on Superbowl Sunday, currently the first Sunday in February. The Superbowl has become the most-watched U.S. television broadcast of the year. We here at Cheap Superbowl tickets full-heartedly endorse the designation of Superbowl Sunday as a national holiday. Did you know that the Super Bowl Sunday is the second-largest U.S. food consumption day, following Thanksgiving?

Super Bowl history:

The first Super Bowl was played on January 15, 1967 between the AFC and the NFC. That was before the leagues merged. Once the leagues merged in 1970, the Superbowl took on a whole new and bigger role in the national subconscious, and the seeds of Superbowl Sunday were planted. Since then the game has pited the winner of the Conference Championshio Games. Fans that buy NFL playoff tickets along the way get to see some great football before it all culminates in the Super Bowl. Before the AFC came along, the NFC pretty much ran the table as far as football was concerned. Sure, there were some rivals, but players and fans remained loyal to the NFC. That all changed with the arrival of the AFC in 1960. Both teams and fans were being drawn to the AFC, in part because the style of play was almost, if not as, competitive as it was in the NFC.

Once the NFC saw that it would have to contend with the AFC, merger talks started to happen. The NFC AFC merger was announced on June 8, 1966. The merger had as a stipulation that the winner of each league would meet to decide who the football “world champion” was. One name for the game that was floated was The Big One, and it was also referred to as the NFC – AFC World Championship. The name “Superbowl” for the championship game seems to have been discovered by accident. An NFL team owner joked about the proposed game as the Superbowl after he saw his son playing with a “super ball.” The name also worked because of the “Bowl” names of college football games.

While the name was just a place-holder until a new one could be found, it stuck and the NFL championship game has been called the Superbowl since. Imagine if instead of Superbowl tickets we had a site devoted to “The Big One tickets” of “NFC-AFC Championship Game tickets!” By the way that superball is in the NFL Hall of Fame. The first two Superbowls were dominated by Vince Lobardi and the NFC’s Packers. Because of that there was some concern at first that the AFC wouldn’t be able to catch up with the caliber of NFC teams. However in Superbowl III the New York Jets beat the Baltimore Colts, followed by the Kansas City Chiefs beating the Minnesota Vikings in Superbowl IV. Ever since Cheap Super Bowl tickets have been the hottest item in sports tickets.

Originally the Superbowl took place early in January, however with the addition of extra games to the NFL regular season schedule, as well as the playoffs, the game has moved up in the calendar and is now played on the first Sunday in February. In 2003 the start of the NFL season was also pushed till after Labor Day. The winner of the Superbowl is awarded the Vince Lobardi trophy, named after the famed Packers coach who won the first two Superbowls as well as three of the five NFL Championships before the Superbowl.
